The practice of Ear Wax Removal dates back to ancient times.

This method of using tongs for ear wax removal would be very dangerous in modern practice, and likely permanently pierce the eardrums or irreversibly damage hearing.

Another alternative, mentioned in 1874, was injecting soap suds. This would not only affect the functions of a standard ear but cause lifelong infection and hearing issues.

According to an 1894 newspaper, another common way of removing ear wax was to apply a mustard poultice behind the ear for two or three nights as a common ‘almost certain cure’. Not only would this irritate the ear, but it would also make it very hot!
