Cryotherapy involves applying liquid nitrogen to the skin to destroy the lesion.
Over the next few days following your cryotherapy treatment, a scab will form over your skin lesion.
This will typically take between 2 – 3 weeks to fall off, but it can take longer.

Skin Tags
Skin tags are soft, skin-coloured growths on the skin . They are very common and are usually small and harmless
Warts
There are 3 types of warts. Common warts, Plantar warts and Flat warts. They are very common, harmless and caused by a virus that is transmitted by touch.
They are extremely difficult to treat and recurrence is common even despite treatment by Cryotherapy or Excision due to viral particles adjacent to the wart not being visible to the naked eye.
It is crucial you are aware of this prior to commiting to treatment or consenting as no refunds will be given.
Verruca
- Known also as Plantar Warts. They are very common and harmless.
They are extremely difficult to treat and recurrence is common even despite treatment by Cryotherapy or Excision due to viral particles adjacent to the verruca not being visible to the naked eye.
It is crucial you are aware of this prior to commiting to treatment or consenting as no refunds will be given.
Age Spots
(Seborrheic Keratosis)(
Harmless, often waxy like appearance these darker brown spots on various areas on the skin. They also be flat and lighter in appearance.
Milia
Milia are very small, raised, pearly-white or yellowish bumps on the skin often seen around the cheeks, nose, eyes and eyelids, forehead and chest. They develop when skin flakes become trapped under the surface of your skin or when keratin builds up and gets trapped. They are harmless but can be unsightly.
Cherry Angioma
There is no direct cause that has been discovered as to why Cherry Angiomas form, however they are thought to form during the ageing process as they are more prevalent in people as they get older
Actinic Keratosis
Also known as Solar Keratosis or Sun damage, this is the pre cancerous lesion that often crusts, scabs and then does not heal. If left untreated this may develop into a squamous cell carcinoma (SCC).It is important that these lesions are reviewed by a GP or qualified clinician with a dermatoscope as soon as possible so that treatment can be initiated.
Frequently asked questions
Cryotherapy, sometimes known as cold therapy, is the local or general use of low temperatures in medical therapy. Cryotherapy may be used to treat a variety of tissue lesions
During your cryotherapy treatment, liquid nitrogen is applied using a special spray gun. You may feel a few seconds of discomfort but not enough to require a local anaesthetic.
The frozen skin of the lesion will turn white before taking one to two minutes to thaw to normal skin temperature.
Depending on the size and thickness of the lesion, we may need to repeat the process once your skin has thawed out.
Cryotherapy is performed at The Nurse Clinic by Advanced Nurse Specialist Donna Dady. Clinical qualifications, training, audit studies, regulation guidelines and NICE guidelines have been completed to ensure your treatment consultation and experience is safe and effective.
Only practitioners who have been trained in the use of cryotherapy should carry out this treatment. (https://cks.nice.org.uk/topics/warts-verrucae/prescribing-information/cryotherapy/).
Cryotherapy is one of the numerous techniques for removing skin tags, verruca and warts.
Other approaches involve duct tape, banana skin, salicylic acid application.
Some techniques are more suitable for children.
Skin Tags, Milia, Age Spots & Cherry Angioma very occasionally need a second treatment however Verruca and Warts require follow-up treatments at regular intervals of 2-3 weeks (sometimes up to 6 treatments). Wart and Verruca treatment may not be effective despite the maximum of treatments.
Risks include:
Pain – It can be uncomfortable at the time of treatment and for a variable time after – painkillers can be taken in the first 24 hours to relieve discomfort.
Swelling and Redness – This is a normal response and usually settles after 2-3 days. The treated area may also ooze a little
Puffiness – Cryotherapy near the eyes may induce puffiness of the lower eyelids which settles within days
Blistering – this is a common consequence of cryotherapy and blisters settle a few days after the scab forms.
Infection – This is very uncommon but easily resolved with a course of antibiotics
Side effects that may occur as a result of the treatment.
• Headaches are not uncommon when freezing on the forehead, scalp and temples and can last for 2 hours.
• Pigment changes. Both hypo pigmentation (lightening of the skin) and hyper pigmentation (darkening of the skin). Both generally last a few months but can be longer lasting.
• Nerve damage. Though rare, damage to nerves is possible, particularly in areas where they lie closer to the surface of the skin, such as the fingers, the wrist, and the area behind the ear. Reports suggest this will disappear within several months.
• A Blister may appear in the treated area and can last anything from a few hours to a few days, dependent on the area to be treated.
• Shards of frozen ice. The innovation of Cryotherapy is the direct application of carbon dioxide under high pressure (55 bar). This high pressure jet may cause minor shards of frozen ice in the air blown away in a circle of approximately 30cm. They will th aw the moment they would eventually touch healthy skin.
• Treatments on sites with coarse terminal hair. Hair follicles are easily damaged by cryosurgery and permanent alopecia is not uncommon.
Appointment times are up to 20 mins duration however it is usually completed sooner
We cannot guarantee that the treatment will be 100% effective especially if you have had a wart or verruca for a number of years. The majority of our treatments are successful. Guidelines advise a maximum of 6 treatments over specific timeframes to maximise a successful outcome.
It is important to understand this prior to booking your appointment.
