Irrigation for Ear Wax Removal

Irrigation uses a gentle, regulated stream of water as a result it dislodge wax blockages.

We will hold a basin under the ear to catch the expelled wax and water.

Due to Infection Control Guidance and to comply with this , Single use irrigation tips, speculum and noots tanks are used at THE NURSE CLINIC

Historically, the technique of “syringing” was used to clear ears, this involved a large syringe and the water was manually squirted into the ear canal. The risk of damage to the ear and eardrum was dependent on the clinician speed in which they delivered the water, occasionally the pressure was too high and perforation of the eardrum occurred.

However, this approach was banned years ago and was replaced by IRRIGATION which is a steady gentle pulsed stream of water delivered into the ear canal.

During the procedure, we will re-examine the ear numerous times to assess the success of the irrigation process.

Finally, once the ear canal is clear and the eardrum can be visualised, a cellulose stick is gently inserted approximately 1cm into the ear to soak up any water in the ear canal.

This helps with reducing the risk of infection

To summarise, here are a list of advantages and disadvantages to both methods.

Advantages & Disadvantages

  • Quick, effective, gentle & safe
  • Better for soft wax especially if softening drops have been overused
  • Less noisy than microsuction
  • Cannot be used if you have a perforated ear drum
  • Should not be used if you have an active infection
  • Ear drops must be used for at least 7 days prior to treatment
  • Cannot be used if you have a mastoid cavity
  • Should not be used if there are any open abrasions to the ear canal
  • No microscope used therefore no direct view of ear canal
